Welcome back.  Let’s conclude our in-depth look at the clav shootout patches.

Details: Patches 11-19:

Clav INT Bank 2

Sample 11:

CLAVNT

Source:
Hacker-B bank from 2K ESQ Archive

Notes:
First of three sounds in the shootout named CLAVNT.  This is a coincidence, as all three of them sound quite different. This one is panned mostly to the right.  Thin and “ringy-dingy”.

Rating:
1.71 out of 5

Comments from the Poll:
“Decent, middle of the road. Too much bass, and EQ might not help...”

Sample 12:

CLAVNT

Source:
Technsis Mastrpatch A

Notes:
Voters who liked clav 10 also liked this one a lot.  This has a full funky tone that would sound right at home on a 1970’s funk album. This is a testament to the sound design abilities of Technosis programmer Mike Peake, who was a Hollywood sound guy and recently known for his work with the massive Alesis Andromeda.

Rating:
2.69 out of 5

Comments from the Poll:
“True grit!  I like it.”

Sample 13:

CLAVNT

Source:
Maartis

Notes:
Voters responded to the realism of this patch. It’s not that it nails the clav sound, its just that it has an air of acoustic authenticity.  This patch was also one of my original favorites, and I expected it to rate pretty high.

Rating:
3.06 out of 5

Comments from the Poll:
“Made me smile.  Is this the pianet patch? (wild guess). --Pretty good really.”

Sample 14:

D-KLAV

Source:
Original Ensoniq cartridge 4A (VPC-4)

Notes:
Almost the end of the BAS clav folks (I promise).  Kudos to the original designer for the creative spelling of the name. If I had to pick a BAS clav to record, this would be the one.

Rating:
1.58 out of 5

Comments from the Poll:
“--as far as these go, this is the best of the BAS wave versions.”

Sample 15:

FL-CLAV

Source:
Hacker1_SQ80 Bank

Notes:
One of the best. Highly rated, and deservedly so. Grab this one for your next Stevie Wonder set.

There is another, duller patch with same name in hacker-f  patch bank in the 2K ESQ.

Rating:
3.08 out of 5

Comments from the Poll:
“--as far as these go, this is the best of the BAS wave versions.”

Sample 16:

MRCLAV

Source:
SQ80 factory patch

Notes:
Let’s play “beat up the presets”.  Unlike some, I am a fan of many of the ESQ and SQ80 presets.  But this clav just doesn’t cut it, even though it scored a respectable 2.31.
But I think experience demonstrates that--just like using STRING for string patches or BRASS for brass patches--it takes some experimentation to build a full-sounding patch. And sometimes that involves counter-intuitive OSC waves.

Rating:
2.31 out of 5

Comments from the Poll:
“I like this one.  Recordable. Good stereo presence.  Also good double-tap effect between stereo channels.”

Sample 17:

PIANET

Source:
Ensoniq cartridge VPC-7 (Studio Mix 2)

Notes:
Down and funky!  Very respectable effort from Ensoniq. Cesium Sound has another pianet patch of the same name (not in the shootout).

Rating:
2.08 out of 5

Comments from the Poll:
“I kind of like this one.  Sounds like it went thru a vocal formant filter.”

Sample 18:

REDCLV

Source:
Cesium Sound SQ80 banks

Notes:
Nick Longo’s Cesium Sound has a 20+ year reputation for putting out a solid product with exceptional sound.  Kudos to Nick, and kudos to this clav sound.  Why is it a “red clav”?  Beats me. All I know is it sounds terrific.

Rating:
3.0 out of 5

Comments from the Poll:
“Hey!  That's it!  That may be the best one!”

Sample 19:

SUSCLV

Source:
Ensoniq cartridge 10a

Notes:
The last official Ensoniq patch is also the last patch in the shootout.  Another bass clav, but the innovation here is that the pedal alters the oscillator tuning, which is a neat trick.  If you own this patch but don’t have a pedal, try re-modulating it so that the wheel or aftertouch performs the same function.

Rating:
1.93 out of 5

Comments from the Poll:
“Another bass clav.  Not my favorite, but not pure evil.”

Now that you’ve listend to all the clavs and know all the tricks, turn the page for conclusions and some free patches.
